UNCLASSIFIED PREPARING FOR PLANETARY DEFENSE: Detection and Interception of Asteroids on Collision Course with Earth Subject and Problem Statement

چکیده

As the Earth revolves around the Sun, it orbits through planetary debris left from the formation of the solar system. Many of the debris objects are asteroids and comets in orbits bringing them close to the Earth and are referred to as Near-Earth-Objects (or NEOs). Of the total NEO population, some portion are in orbits actually intersecting or crossing the orbit of the Earth. The asteroids of this class are known as Earth-CrossingAsteroids (ECAs). Occasionally, the motion and relative position of the Earth and an ECA in their respective orbits cause them to collide.

Validated integration of Solar System Dynamics 1 st IAA Planetary Defense Conference : Protecting Earth from Asteroids 27 - 30

The Earth orbits the Sun in a sort of cosmic shooting gallery, subject to impacts from comets and asteroids. It is only fairly recently that we have come to appreciate that these impacts by asteroids and comets (often called Near Earth Objects, or NEO) pose a significant hazard to life and property. Although the probability of the Earth being struck by a large NEO is extremely small, the conseq...

Possibility of collision between co-orbital asteroids and the Earth

Considering hypothetical co-orbital asteroids with the Earth, Tatum (1997) presented a study about the necessary radial distance in order to produce collision. He adopted an analysis considering a composition of circular two-body systems, Sun-Earth and Sun-Asteroid. He found that asteroids with radial positions between 0.9943 and 1.0057 AU would necessarily collide with the Earth. In the presen...

Extended Abstracts from the NASA Workshop on Scientific Requirements for Mitigation of Hazardous Comets and Asteroids

The threat of possible collision of asteroids and comets with our planet has reached an international stage since1990 when U.S.A. Congress set up a dedicated committee for the analysis and the assessment of this problem. The U.N. organized a congress later on to summarize the c u r r e n t knowledge on this subject as well as the European Council recommended its member states to conduct studies...

Collisional and Rotational Disruption of Asteroids

Asteroids are leftover pieces from the era of planet formation that help us understand conditions in the early Solar System. Unlike larger planetary bodies that were subject to global thermal modification during and subsequent to their formation, these small bodies have kept at least some unmodified primordial material from the solar nebula. However, the structural properties of asteroids have ...

Low-Energy Impact Dynamics in the Earth – Moon System ⋆

Most of the craters on the surface of the Moon were created by the collision of minor bodies of the Solar System, in particular asteroids coming from the Main Belt as a consequence of different types of resonance. Our aim is to investigate the dynamics of such asteroids, paying special attention on the hyperbolic invariant manifolds associated with the equilibrium point L2 of the Earth – Moon s...
